1937, Joan Miró, Head -- Joan Miró Foundation (Barcelona)

From the museum label: Miró participated in the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 Paris Universal Exposition with a large mural painting, The Reaper, created directly on the Celotex panels covering the walls of the building. This material spurred him to make other works, like this painting, in which he depicted a profiled head in black. No detail in the figuration alludes to the Spanish Civil War. Instead, he translated the image of rawness of that time to the materiality of the work.
