1960, Joan Miró, Self-portrait -- Joan Miró Foundation (Barcelona)
From the museum label: At the height of the Spanish Civil War, Miró, exiled in Paris, painted his Self-portrait with the help of a magnifying mirror. This portrait reproduces almost imperceptible details of his face and, at the same time, allows a series of astral signs to appear, which depict Miró as a cosmogonic figure. With the desire to continue working on it, he commissioned a copy that he would not be able to complete until the 1960s. He did so in a forceful, synthetic way, with graphic work that outlines his face and chest. He had previously done numerous drawings linking his portrait to the landscape of Catalonia.
