From the exhibition label: The married couple formed by the former circus vedette and later art collector Mauricia de Thiers and the art critic Gustave Coquiot had a friendly relationship with Valadon. Coquiot had dealt with artists such as Van Gogh, Picasso and Joaquim Sunyer, and later became a great promoter of the artist Maurice Utrillo, Valadon's son. The couple belonged to the bourgeois milieu that Valadon frequented as she established herself as an artist, a correlation of her professional success.
