From the exhibition label: For this painting, Valadon was inspired by the sculptures of ballerinas by Degas. At that time, few people had access to Degas's studio, including Valadon, from his closest circle. Valadon replicated their morphology and movement, but adapted them to her pictorial codes, in a kind of homage to the artist who had helped her most in her artistic career.
