1856, Utagawa Hiroshige, Robe-Hanging Pine, Senzoku Pond, from 100 Famous Views of Edo [woodblock print] -- Brooklyn Museum

This composition was among the first designed by Hiroshige for the series, and it is one of the most conventional. It places the title object at the center, set within a scenic landscape. The influential Buddhist priest Nichiren (1222-1282) is said to have stopped at this pond to wash his feet, hanging his robe on the impressive pine tree. The pond and a descendant of Nichiren's tree are now the focus of a small park, surrounded by a residential neighborhood.
