1957, Ernie Barnes, First Painting -- Brooklyn Museum (special exhibition)

On view are two artworks by Ernie Barnes that represent the beginning and the end of his storied career. Barnes made First Painting as a college art class assignment during his first semester at the historically Black college North Carolina College at Durham (now North Carolina Central University). Barnes's oeuvre reflects his prolific practice, which centered on his lived experiences and love for his community. First Painting was gifted to the Deans in honor their long friendship with and support of the artist.
