1914, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Women at Potsdamer Platz, Berlin [woodcut] -- Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: Kirchner adopted a consistent composition for his array of views of Potsdamer Platz, one of Berlin's most iconic business and entertainment centers. Sidewalks, as well as the traffic island in the foreground, act as focal points around which the urban environment diverges into vectors of bustle and movement. Several local landmarks are visible, including the Potsdamer Platz train station and Café Piccadilly, a newly opened 2,500-seat restaurant. Amid the flurry of activity, Kirchner places two sex workers on the pedestal-like traffic island, implying their status as captivating attractions akin to any other commodity on display in the plaza's numerous shop windows.
