1914, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, White Dancer in a Cabaret [lithograph] -- Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: Across each state of the lithograph White Dancer in a Cabaret, Kirchner emphasized distinct details. In the first—shown here—he accentuated the height of the dancer's leg by including hatched lines to create a shadow on its underside; he removed this hatching in the second state. Then, before printing the final state, he applied turpentine to the entire matrix to loosen the contours of the ink and create a blurred effect. While Kirchner often delighted in the new, morally transgressive attractions the city offered its inhabitants, in this lithograph he highlights a gendered imbalance in terms of power and pleasure. The seated men at lower right laugh, drink, and revel as the blank-faced dancer mechanically lifts her leg into the air.
