1895, Edvard Munch, Tingletangle [watercolor] -- Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: In a rejection of the idea of domesticity, bohemians spent most of their time in cafés, nightclubs, and music halls--spaces where sexual and social boundaries became fluid. Recalling images of the Moulin Rouge in Paris by his contemporary Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Munch depicts a cabaret show at the notorious Academy of Music on Berlin's Friedrichstraße. In this caricatured view of the performance, the dancers—who often did sex work to make ends meet—are lined up on stage purely for the men's delectation. The figure in the left foreground interacts with the men, presumably Munch and his friends, and may be making arrangements to meet up after the show.
