1919, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Moonlit Night, Winter.--Längmatte at Moonset [woodcut] -- Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: "There was such a wonderful moonset before sunrise this morning, the mountain all blue, the sky reddish violet with pink clouds, and the yellow crescent moon," Kirchner wrote to his friend and occasional student Nele van de Velde regarding the vista seen here. "It was simply madly beautiful, but terribly cold." Moonlight Night, Winter. Längmatte at Moonset is one of the earliest in a group of woodcuts Kirchner made in 1919 that experimented with the application of diverse colors. It captures the view from his cabin on the Längmatte hillside, framed by the Alpstein massif and Tinzenhorn Mountain, and records the ever-changing effulgence of the early morning's colors.
