1645 (ca.), Hunhar (attributed), Attendants at an Imperial Durbar -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)

From the exhibition label: Grandees and court attendants are assembled facing left toward a missing left-hand page, where the Mughal emperor would have been shown receiving the Persian ambassador in a full durbar assembly. Seen in the present painting are several Persian figures from the ambassador's retinue, identifiable by their large turbans. An animated group of musicians welcomes the party from the naqqarkhana (drum house) above the gate, an important feature of Mughal court ritual. The painting is the right-hand side of a double-page composition from the prestigious Padshahnama (Chronicle of the Emperor), the illustrated record the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan (r. 1628-58).
