1931, Pierre Bonnard, The Breakfast Room (Dining Room Overlooking the Garden) -- Phillips Collection (Washington) (special exhibition)
From the exhibition label: In this painting, Bonnard studies the way light comes into a room, falling on a tabletop and casting deep shadows beneath the objects placed there. Through the glass, across the balustrade of a terrace, we see a verdant lawn, flanked by sun-struck trees. On either side of the window, patterned wallpaper is thrown into shadow. Marthe is there at left, cropped by the painting's edge.
