From the exhibition label: In 1893, Marthe de Méligny met Pierre Bonnard. Bonnard, smitten, soon began to make paintings, drawings, and prints inspired by her. Among the earliest paintings devoted to Marthe is Young Girl with Black Stockings, painted the year they met, when Marthe was 24 years old. It announces the direction that the artist's early depictions of his lover would take; though here only the skin of her back is visible and her gaze is averted, her stockinged legs smolder with erotic intent.
