1891, Pierre Bonnard, Women with a Dog -- Phillips Collection (Washington) (special exhibition)
From the exhibition label: In works like Women with a Dog, Bonnard establishes the garden as a setting for domestic harmony, as it had been for him in his youth. The garden was a gathering place for family and friends, their children, and their menageries: cats, rabbits, hens, and roosters, but above all, dogs. The shaggy hound shown here so affectionately was Ravageau, Bonnard's sister Andrée's pet.
