1877 (ca.), Paul Cezanne, Self-Portrait -- Phillips Collection (Washington)

From the museum label: There are 27 known self-portraits by Cezanne. This example, painted either in Paris or Aix, depicts the artist as an aging man. Thick color patches and thin parallel brushstrokes construct his face, beard, and hair, techniques he established while working with the Impressionists. His jacket appears sketched and the background is unadorned. When the picture was exhibited at the Paris Salon d'Automne in 1904, a critic described it as having "rough and aggressive sincerity."
