From the museum label: "I Certainly Want You Two Girls to Meet," at a Virginia Horse Show displays the artist's penchant for incisive humor and has resonance with the Commonwealth. This early work stems from Bellows's stay in Virginia in 1908, when he taught summer school at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. With its bold markings and expressive hatching, the drawing the animated graphic style that Bellows developed in numerous commercial assignments and carried over to his painting enterprise. "I Certainly Want You Two Girls to Meet" had not been on public display for 103 years when it was installed at VMFA in November 2015 -- which would not have happened without the McGlothlins' generosity and far-reaching vision.
