1914, John Sloan, Glimpse of Gloucester Trolley -- Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond)

From the museum label: John Sloan first visited Gloucester, Massachusetts, in the summer of 1914, and returned annually for the following four years. Painted the year after the so-called Armory Show introduced American audiences to modern art and abstraction, Glimpse of Gloucester Trolley shows Sloan's newfound emphasis on vantage point and his enthusiasm for bold strokes of high-key pigment. Bathed in a warm summer light, the skyline is crowned with the tower of city hall and the steeple of a nearby church. The city's buildings, waterways, streets, and residents inhabit a colorful world of midsummer delight. Sloan concentrated on landscape painting during his time in Gloucester, finding there a much needed reprieve from the urban subjects and styles that dominated his work in New York City.
