1720 (ca.), [Indian, Central India or Northern Deccan, probably Bundelkhand], Malava Ragini [watercolor] -- Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond)
From the museum label:
This picture comes from a handsome ragamala of 36 large pages ordered according to Hanuman's System. In the more prevalent Painters System, like the Malava in the adjacent gallery, this ragini appears as the third wife of the Malkos family and the series' tenth folio. In Hanuman's System, however, it is the second ragini of the Shri family and--as appropriately marked in the inscription--page number 27 of the set. In either case, though, Malava's key iconography is the same: lovers walking together toward the bedchamber. While Hanuman's System is most closely associated with Amber and Jaipur in Rajasthan, it was also employed in parts of Central India.
