1939 (ca.), Kawase Hasui, Ojiya, Niigata Prefecture [watercolor] -- Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond)
From the museum label: To authentically represent the essence of Japan in his prints, Hasui traveled throughout the country, sketching his preliminary landscape compositions from life. He chose to portray scenes, such as Ojiya in this painting, that evoked a familiar sense of Japan for his viewers through depictions of local flora, fauna, architecture, and landscapes. The accompanying titles written on the borders of Hasui's paintings and prints identify the locations of these scenes. Hasui's paintings are distinguishable from his prints not only by their mediums, but also by his square or rectangular watercolor seal.
