1919, Murakami Kagaku, Chinese Beauty -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label: The many lines that represent this subject's clothing exemplify the blend of red color and ink, whether layered one on top of another or positioned side by side. In some instances, Kagaku may even have loaded a brush with both ink and color before drawing a line, an unusual way to use traditional Japanese pigments. The transparent quality of Kagaku's brushwork achieves an atmospheric effect and enhances the ethereal nature of the woman. Unique among Kagaku's works depicting women, Chinese Beauty exoticizes its subject and stands out for the artist's intuitive brushwork.
