1922, Tsukioka Kōgyo, Kinsatsu, from the series Nōgaku kyakuban -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label: Kinsatsu belongs to a category of noh plays traditionally shown at the end of a day's worth of performances. These are often relatively brief, positive in spirit, and celebratory in message. The auspicious timbre and reassuring message of Kinsatsu align with such conventions. The essence of the play is a celebration of the benevolent imperial rule of the emperor Kanmu (737-806), who was blessed by divine forces. The celebratory, if nationalistic, association contrasts with the dark, foreboding atmosphere of the print.
