1925 (ca.), Dōmoto Inshō, Visiting a Friend in Spring -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label: Dömoto Inshō experimented in many different painting styles, from literati works like this one to abstract art in the post-World War II decades. Literati painting occupied an important place in his work, particularly during the 1920s, when a new interest in this tradition gripped Japan's artistic community. This painting is an excellent example of Inshō's exploration of literati themes and aesthetics. At first glance, it looks contorted and abbreviated. But look closer and you will see Inshō's use of foreshortening and perspective, blending Western methods with literati aesthetics.
