1778 (ca.), Hayashi Jukkō, Lu Dongbin -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label: Hayashi Jukkō's short life of thirty-seven years was marked by an astonishing forcefulness. Lu Dongbin embodies the bold, edgy brushwork that Jukkō became known for. His impatient, uneven lines give his painting an uncanny otherworldliness, as if seen through 3D goggles, one of the hallmarks of Jukkō's work. In medieval paintings, Lu Dongbin (796-1016) is portrayed as a tempestuous force able to summon mighty dragons from a flask. Jukkō offers a tamed interpretation in which the immortal becomes a calm, introspective scholar. This version follows Chinese literary works, such as History of the Song of 1343, reflecting the bookishness of many literati subjects.
