The exuberantly coloured landscapes developed by André Derain and Henri Matisse (1869-1954) at Collioure near the Spanish coast in the summer of 1905 triggered the first avant-garde movement of the early 20th century in FranceDubbed Fauves ('wild beasts) by a critic in 1906the term was embraced by Matisse and Derain and the short-lived and loosely affiliated group of artists around them. Soon afterwards, Derain embarked on a solo painting trip to the French Riviera town of L'Estaque, where he painted this and 14 other landscapes, conveying the sensations of the trees and hills in the hot summer sun with strokes of raw, smouldering colour applied directly from the tube onto primed canvas.
