1930 (ca.), Pierre Bonnard, Compotier des pommes (Bowl of Apples) -- Auckland Art Gallery

From the gallery label:

Around 1908, Pierre Bonnard began making paintings that combine Impressionist-style brushwork with structured compositions to depict 'what one sees when one enters a room all of a sudden'Here, the artist captures that fleeting moment when the eye focuses on a particular object and relegates everything else to peripheral vision. Closely cropping this view of a dining room table, Bonnard positions the viewer just above a bowl of stacked apples that he sensuously describes with touches of bold colour. Just as the ripened fruits seem to leap out towards the spectator, the crumpled tablecloth and rattan chair rendered in muted tones recede into the painting's background, becoming vague, unintelligible blurs occupying the edges of the field of vision.
