1873, Paul Cezanne, Entrée de ferme, rue Rémy, Auvers [Entrance to the Farm, Remy Street, Auvers] -- Auckland Art Gallery
From the gallery label:
Paul Cezanne took up etching for the first time when he was invited to stay at Auvers by his friend and patron Dr Paul Gachet (1828-1909) in July 1873. Using Gachet's printmaking studio, he produced five examples under his host's guidance. Provided with tiny, prepared copperplates, Cezanne went into the local countryside in search of motifs. In this exercise he has rapidly sketched the gateway to an old farm, using bold parallel strokes to record the untidy forms of the leaning tree, unkempt fence and straggly grass. He would have then taken the plate back to Gachet's to experiment with the acid etching and inking stages.
