1946 (ca.), Mark Rothko, Untitled [watercolor and ink] -- National Gallery of Art (Washington)

From the museum label: Several works of this period allude to classical architecture. This watercolor includes fragments that call to mind the fluted columns, capitals, and ornamentation of ancient Greek temple facades. Years later, while visiting the Doric-style temples at Paestum in Italy, Rothko would reflect that he had "been painting Greek temples all my life without knowing it."
