1873, James McNeill Whistler, Variations in Flesh Colour and Green - The Balcony -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label: In 1892, Freer acquired his first major Whistler oil painting. Colorful kimono-clad models occupy a balcony overlooking the River Thames while listening to music played on a Japanese shamisen, a traditional stringed instrument. A single standing figure leans over the rail, contemplating the drab factories on the opposite riverbank. She invites us to look at and assess the industrial developments that enriched art collectors, including Frederick Leyland, a shipping magnate and the original owner of the Peacock Room, and Charles Lang Freer, who made his wealth in the railroad car business.
