1959, Mark Rothko, Lavender and Mulberry -- National Gallery of Art (Washington) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: Looking at the large white field of this work may feel like looking into a fogged mirror or through a clouded window. Its scale -- roughly the head-to-hip measurement of a man of Rothko's height (five feet, eleven inches) -- reinforces this association. Instead of providing specific images for scrutiny, Rothko adopted his classic format in part to cultivate sustained looking and self-reflection.
