1880, James McNeill Whistler, Bead Stringers [crayon and pastel] -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label: A young bead stringer sits at the near end of a narrow alley in Venice's Castello district. A light gray façade broken by a dark doorway stands at the far end of the passage. Bits of clean linen flutter on the lines like pennants, and a checkered patch of turquoise and deep green pulls the eye through the constricted space toward brightly clad figures in the distance. Whistler's touches of pastel sparkle like the little glass beads Venetian women strung for sale to tourists.
