1884, James McNeill Whistler, Nocturne: Black and Red-Back Canal, Holland [watercolor] -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)
From the museum label: Whistler skillfully applied watercolor washes to enliven his cropped and flattened grid with richly glowing reds and yellows. He included two figures, one in black and the other in white, perhaps alluding to the couple furtively leaving the London pleasure garden in Nocturne: Cremorne Gardens, No. 3, nearby. Once again, Whistler is the discreet observer of aspects of modern life many considered improper.
