1937, Mark Rothko, Untitled (woman in red armchair) [watercolor] -- National Gallery of Art (Washington) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: Rothko's wife, Edith Sachar, was often his model in the 1930s. Several portraits in this room are likely of her. This one appears to mimic a painting by Paul Cézanne of his own wife, Hortense Fiquet. Like Rothko's subject, Hortense seems distracted and distant. At the same time, one senses that Rothko may have struggled with the convincing portrayal of individuals, instead reducing their faces to blank masks.
