1889, James McNeill Whistler, The Grey House -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)
From the museum label: In this image, Whistler focused on a scene not far from his Amsterdam hotel. Located on the picturesque Palmgracht, a street bordering the little Jordaan canal in the center of the city, the gray house also appears in two Whistler etchings of the same date: The Embroidered Curtain, on view in the next gallery, and the rare Jews' Quarter, Amsterdam, one of the few Amsterdam etchings not in the Freer Gallery's collection. These works, centered around the theme of shop fronts and streetscapes, showcase Whistler's skill in many different mediums.
