1895, James McNeill Whistler, The Little Nurse -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)
From the museum label: In autumn 1895, Whistler brought his cancer-stricken wife to the village of Lyme Regis on the Dorset coast, far from London's polluted bustle. The sea air did not improve her condition, but after she returned to the city, the artist stayed in Dorset and worked to raise money for her treatments. Whistler did not use what is now the title of this painting. However, scholars have suggested that the topic of a nurse might have resonated with him during this difficult time.
