1888, William Merritt Chase, Lady in Black -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
From the museum label: The subject of this portrait, Marietta Benedict Cotton (1868-1947), studied painting with William Merritt Chase and became a successful society portraitist in New York and London. Chase later recalled that Cotton had arrived at his studio as a pupil, but "the moment she appeared before me I saw her only as a splendid model.... Such a model is a treasure find. It is the personality that inspires, and which you depict on canvas." He convinced Cotton to pose, and painted the portrait immediately using a monochromatic palette inspired by James McNeill Whistler and Spanish Old Masters, such as Velazquez.
