1910, Pablo Picasso, Female Nude -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
From the museum label: This large drawing demonstrates Picasso's capacity to experiment with common themes of Western art, such as the standing female nude. Executed in Paris in spring 1910, Female Nude represents an early high point in Picasso's intense exploration of female anatomy that he undertook that year. Through the array of overlapping planes, Picasso's figure obtains a dynamic sculptural quality, despite no singular line of action. A cacophony of cross-contour lines challenges the eye, appearing convex or concave depending on how one reads the position of adjacent planes.
