1905, Henri Matisse, The Pier of Collioure -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
From the museum label: A panoramic sweep of two coves--Voramar and Port d'Avall--punctuated by a seaside church and its emblematic bell tower, this study may have been sketched quickly on-site. Matisse focuses more on distant details than the ocean and beach in the near ground. His scant color in the lower half of the painting draws our attention to the raw canvas. This is another example where the canvas support is arranged to integrate into the overall structure.
