1906, Henri Matisse, Self-portrait -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: Directly gazing at the viewer in uncanny self-exposure, Matisse portrays himself in a sailor's jersey, wide-eyed and confident. Green shadows around his cheeks, eyes, and forehead echo hues found elsewhere in the portrait. Amid thick layers of paint, a touch of pink evokes his natural skin tone. The background greens and blues enhance the volume of the face in quick, often unblended marks. His assured brushwork and the immediacy of his facial expression both suggest a self-possession he must have gained the previous summer in Collioure. With this work, Matisse was clearly hitting his stride as a painter.
