1905, Andre Derain, Boats at the Port of Collioure -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
From the museum label: In this port scene, Derain is testing relational color and abstracting forms as he observes a few passersby set against densely moored fishing vessels. His brushwork varies from mere touches of color to more broadly stroked areas in a rich palette of often imagined hues. Color defines form, even if only in a gesture or two. In the near ground, the canvas priming color--off-white--is integral to the suggestion of sand.
