1905, Andre Derain, Fishing Boats, Collioure -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: This highly animated composition, where a vibrant palette clearly defines form in the near ground, is an exercise in color relationships. A kaleidoscope of varied brush marks dematerializes the fishing boats and their keepers while the open waters rely on the pinkish mauve ground to suggest the infinite sea. Only sporadic touches of the brush interrupt the presence of placid water and suggest a distant horizon.
