1905, Andre Derain, Environs of Collioure -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
From the museum label: When the heat of the Mediterranean sun overcame Matisse and Derain, they often retreated into the hills above the village of Collioure. In this loosely brushed landscape, Derain experiments with blended color, suggesting a density of foliage marked by undulating trees in the foreground. He merely suggests his imagery, leaving much to the imagination. The canvas ground is apparent throughout the painting, unifying disparate strokes in a potpourri of decorative vegetation.
