1905, Andre Derain, Matisse Painting Madame Matisse in a Japanese Robe at the Seashore -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)

From the museum label: If any image encapsulates the intimacy of friendship and creativity in Collioure, it is this charming pen and ink drawing. Amélie often posed in her recognizable blue-and-white kimono, a costume she wore indoors and outdoors while modeling for both Matisse and Derain. Here at water's edge, Derain sketches Matisse at his easel. Comfortably situated on an elevated outcropping, supplies in hand, Matisse studies his familiar subject with rapt attention. His wide-brimmed hat protects him from the blinding sun. The drawing is purely linear--energetic lines in largely parallel strokes. Derain has captured his subjects with great vitality.
