1905, Andre Derain, The Port of Collioure -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)

From the museum label: Drawing on the same image as shown in The Faubourg of Collioure, here Derain subdues the palette, relying more conservatively on an array of colors in keeping with logical descriptions. The artist uses the off-white canvas primer as integral to his subject, as shown in the sea and elsewhere. The unpainted "highlights" on the buildings and distant mountains enliven the whole, animating surfaces otherwise cast in darkened hues. As with so many of his paintings of the port, Derain is preoccupied with color relationships, without much regard for spatial recession. Harmonious colors intermix with black to add touches of extreme contrast.
