1905, Andre Derain, Henri Matisse -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: This portrait of Henri Matisse is one of the great masterpieces of Fauve painting. Derain takes every liberty with color and brushwork, and yet for all the work's seeming transgressions as a portrait, carries it off with verve. The facial flesh tones glow in thickly painted patches while the viridian green shadowing reinforces volume. Multiple marks evoke facial hair. A touch of red and an attenuated pipe add more character to this bravura image. Light and shadow model facial volume with alacrity.
