Derain takes every liberty with color and brushwork, and yet for all the work's seeming transgressions as a portrait, carries it off with verve. The facial flesh tones glow in thickly painted patches while the viridian green shadowing reinforces volume. Multiple marks evoke facial hair. A touch of red and an attenuated pipe add more character to this bravura image. Light and shadow model facial volume with alacrity.
