1906 (ca.), Andre Derain, The Pier at L'Estaque -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)

From the museum label: In August 1906, Derain traveled to L'Estaque, a small fishing village north of Marseilles. L'Estaque was a magnet for artists in the late nineteenth century, most notably Paul Cézanne. In this lightly sketched marine painting, Derain delineates the concrete pier in a few diagonal strokes of cadmium red. Deftly in charge of his newfound palette of primary colors, alternating reds, yellows, greens, and blues fill out the image where the priming ground is central to the barely articulated panoramic sea vista.
