1905, Henri Matisse, Madame Matisse in the Olive Grove -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)

From the museum label: A puzzling pattern of linear strokes in diagonal formations, the figure of Madame Matisse is barely discernible. Appearing as a diminutive presence holding a parasol on a pink pathway, she is surrounded by dots and dashes only slightly resembling tree foliage. In composition, the dense linear technique of Vincent van Gogh comes to mind, although Matisse's varied surface patterning dissolves form rather than defines it. His brushstrokes defy descriptive function, subduing the subject in a scintillating arrangement on the canvas.
