1905, Henri Matisse, Andre Derain -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
From the museum label: For all the structure and thick paint application in Derain's reciprocal portrait of Matisse, this likeness of Derain has a much sketchier quality, apparently painted with some speed. There are few hard edges. Matisse mixes viridian green with white to roughly lay in shadowing and facial modeling. The more one looks at this portrait, the more one recognizes that Matisse is testing his paint colors, working up the face with many hues, often in combination with white. There is an ease to this brushwork and a confidence in its rough arrangement. All said, the portrait exudes energy.
