1905, Andre Derain, Woman with a Shawl, Madame Matisse in a Kimono -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)

From the museum label: Matisse's wife, Amélie, often posed for Matisse and Derain during their sojourn in Collioure. She was a patient model, whether sitting for the artists at the beach or inland among the olive trees. This painting is one of the dazzling portraits to emerge from that summer. Derain paints his seated subject against a saturated red and green background. The painting's focus is her blue-and-white kimono--a prop Matisse often used to dress his models. The kimono, with its dashes and curlicues swirling around a crisp white background, activates the canvas. A red fan sets off the patterned robe.
