1905, Andre Derain, The Sailboats at Collioure -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: Vivid colors saturate this near view of bustling life at the port. Ocher yellows, oranges, and mediating greens seem to burst from their descriptive function in rough, thickly painted patches. Colors, and the mere suggestion of gesturing figures in the densely populated port, animate all the surfaces. The painting is a sizzling patchwork of forms.
