1514, Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio), St. Peter Delivered from Prison (detail) -- Vatican Museums (Rome)
From the museum label: St. Peter delivered from Prison (above the window facing the Belvedere Courtyard) depicts the Prince of the apostles and the first pope, as he was miraculously freed from prison by an angel while his guards lay sleeping (Acts 12, 5-12). The scene refers to Julius II who, before being elected pope, was the titular cardinal of the Church of St. Peter in Chains. As Raphael creates a celebration of light, he compares the divine
illumination of the angel with that of dawn, of the moon, of
the flares and their reflection on armour, and even natural
light through the window, creating an extraordinary effect.
